My top 5 favorites from the Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 2017

As y’all know, the lakme fashion week winter festive 2017 concluded last week… and after a super-hectic, tiring (read killing) week where I tried my level best to attend all the possible shows, here’s my list of top 5 favorites from this season, who I’d totally love to actually wear!

GAURANG SHAH

Gaurang Shah’s ‘Chitravali – a magnificent jewel of art’ has to be my numero uno, this season! Every piece from his collection is like a masterpiece of art… with Kalamkari, meticulously used to create paintings inspired by 30 frescos from Ajanta Ellora caves, onto his garments. Honestly… every piece was like a painting in itself – timeless and evergreen… right from the sarees to those gorgeous Anarkalis with 6 – 14mtrs of flare!!

For me, the most beautiful moments of the show were when the models wearing Anarkalis twirled… and the flare opened up to reveal the most gorgeous pieces of art I’ve ever seen on clothes! Hats off to Gaurang, for not just the creativity and technical, textile innovation, but for being able to create something that is so simple and yet so special, that it could easily be passed on over generations as heirloom.

CHOLA

‘Chola’, the label by Sohaya Misra’s Autumn/Winter 2017 collection ‘One Love. One People. One Planet’, created with recycled fabric for the ‘Restart Fashion’ initiative, is something I could live in, this winter!

Personally, I loved the quirky asymmetry, oversized layers, androgynous collars, plaid checks and monotones used in the collection! What was most interesting however, is the role reversal and asymmetry that was at play… trousers with collars and sleeves tied into quirky bows at the back, completely stole my heart!

NIKITA MHAISALKAR

On day 1, when I went down to the stalls, I remember naturally just gravitating towards this one store… and I actually found it really difficult to step out of it without going ‘ooohh and aaahh’ about almost every garment on display. In my mind, Nikita Mhaisalkar gives luxury knitwear in India, a new meaning!

Personally I loved the sweaters, waist coats, cloaks, kimonos and trenches, in those perfect winter colors of steel, gray and charcoal with pops of bright tangerine kinda stealing the show! The minimal silver wire embroidery playing hide n seek with the knitted fabrics, gave it the perfect amount of shimmer to make them stand out as both evening party wear and ‘festive’ wear! (I for once, would totally love to wear some of those cloaks even on ethnic wear)

Frankly, all throughout, I couldn’t stop imagining how wonderful her collection would look, hanging in my closet 😀

Rina Singh’s autumn/winter 2017 collection was a display of delicate, soft and pleasing colors and fabrics, that were extremely wearable and desirable! She used washed and over-dyed linens, linen zari, linen wool and silk blended with metallic yarns to create soft coats, pinafores and dresses that I honestly would love to have in my wardrobe! And you already know about my weakness for faded, natural colors!! Eka’s color pallet was full of faded natural shades of nude, blush pink, beige and gray, which looked so feminine and dreamy that it obviously made it to my top 5!

AMIT AGGARWAL

An unlikely choice, given my usual aesthetic sensibilities!!! But Amit Aggarwal’s bridal couture collection was contemporary, extravagant and made for quite a sight! Inspired by the French Riviera, it had its heart in good ol’ Benaras… because the collection was created using discarded Banarasi Silks and saris… that gave it even more meaning and a purpose. It was like a perfect fusion of East and West… of the glorious Past and the mysterious Future!

In my case, the construction of the garments, golds, electric blues and the large, oversized flares of the lehengas… kinda made this collection one of my top favorites. I agree that it wasn’t the most subtle or delicate bridal wear… instead, it was unapologetic opulence, but done with class. Honestly, I wish I was getting married NOW!

OTHERS:

Some of my other favorites from this season are Sanjay Garg’s (Raw Mango) ‘Cloud Walker’ collection, Shailesh Singhania’s gorgeous Banarasi sarees and coats, the fun and innocent collection by The Meraki Project that took me back to childhood and Doodlage’s quirky and funky collection that is so Me!

Shailesh Singhania’s ‘Winter Rose collection’. Check out that festive cloak, perfect for a winter wedding!
